Miele della Lunigiana PDO: the product

Miele della Lunigiana PDO is the first and only Italian honey that has received from the European Union the Protected Designation of Origin, the highest recognition for product typicality.

The production territory includes the 14 towns of the Lunigiana area, whose typical mountain landscape has an extremely variegated vegetation with particularly widespread acacia and chestnut woods, very fine plant essences from an apicultural point of view. This, together with a tradition that without doubt dates back to the end of the fifteenth century and with the low grade of industrialization in this area, determines, in the Lunigiana area, an ideal environment for high-quality apiculture with productions of acacia and chestnut honey with excellent chemical-physical and organoleptic characteristics.

Acacia honey is typically straw-coloured, it has a light aroma, a sweet taste and it keeps for a long time at a liquid and limpid state.

A more persistent taste, with a rather strong sour component characterizes, on the other hand, chestnut honey, which has a strong and permanent aroma and is dark-coloured, tending to reddish.
