Promotion of PDO and PGI Labelled Products

PDO and PGI labelled products stand out distinctively in the vast panorama of the agriculture-alimentary business, thanks to their unique quality, safety and traceability. Alongside other initiatives, this website is conceived to help EU citizens become more familiar with, and better appreciate these products.

This project foresees several types of actions and initiatives, all of which aim at raising awareness among consumers regarding the true value of EU certifications and stimulating the consumption of certified products.

The products covered by the project are safeguarded by seven Tuscan Consortia and Associations, namely: Pecorino Toscano PDO, Prosciutto Toscano PDO, Olio Extravergine di Oliva Toscano PGI, Lardo di Colonnata PGI, Miele della Lunigiana PDO, Castagna del Monte Amiata PGI, Fagiolo di Sorana PGI.

The project foresees promotional activities to be carried out in Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The principal initiatives to be carried out between 2008 and 2010 focus on:

  • Dedicated workshops addressed to distributors, restaurants and catering businesses, and specialized press to spread information on the meaning of PDO and PGI labels, as well as on the specific features of certified products covered by the project;
  • Installation of corners inside supermarkets or gourmet grocery shops where, over a 15-day period, specially trained staff will advertise and promote traditional specialties with possible tasting sessions and distribution of information leaflets;
  • "Tasting week" events in high level restaurants, where menus based on PDO and PGI labelled products will be offered, so that consumers have an opportunity to experience the high level of quality and taste guaranteed by PDO and PGI certified products and, consequently, foster the demand for such products;
  • Press informational campaigns.
